Alternatives To A Failing Registry System

We can’t deny it: we’re in a nasty situation because the Kennel Clubs refuse to listen to the (parent) breed clubs and breed councils. The democratic system, if there ever was one, is failing big time. I’m sure there must be legal procedures which would ultimately force the Kennel Clubs to grant the wishes or demands of the breed clubs, but obviously this is a river too deep, a mountain too high, to those who actually have the power to make a difference and do something about this mess.

The ideal situation would be that Kennel Clubs refuse to register all dilute “Labradors” and that every registered Labrador is free from the dilution gene (Dd or dd). Second best would be to register dilutes with a letter “d”, with the restrictions that their offspring will not be registered, or (third best) that they’re only allowed to breed within the “d” population.

If the solutions above can’t be realized because of the lack of democracy, or the lack of willingness to take the Kennel Clubs to the court, there are some alternatives we could consider.

1. The Labrador Clubs, by authority of their parent clubs or breed councils, could issue their own pedigree certificates, which would (contrary to the pedigree certificates of the Kennel Clubs) guarantee that the dog in this pedigree certificate is a purebred Labrador Retriever, free from the dilution gene (Dd or dd). This system works very good in Germany, where both the FCI-recognized Labrador Clubs issue their own FCI-recognized pedigree certificates. Although there are many dilute “Labradors” in Germany, most of them, if not all, are registered with the non-FCI recognized clubs, which keeps the studbooks separated.

2. The Labrador Clubs, by authority of their parent clubs or breed councils, could issue their own “certificates of purity”, which would (contrary to the pedigree certificates of the Kennel Clubs) guarantee that the dog with this certificate is a purebred Labrador Retriever, free from the dilution gene (Dd or dd). Any KC pedigree would be pretty worthless without this particular additional certificate.
